The topic of women's empowerment gained its first momentum in the mid-1970s with the adoption of the resolution 31/136 of the United Nations Decade for Women (United Nations, 1976). The resolution called upon governments to ensure equal and effective participation of women in the political, economic, social and cultural life. Its adoption paved way for other resolutions and international declarations, including the United Nations (UN) Convention on Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) in 1979, and the 1995 Beijing Platform for Action (BPfA).
