Are short-term gains in learning outcomes possible? Evidence from the Malawi Education Sector Improvement Project

Despite substantial investments in infrastructure and teachers, many low-income countries struggle with large class sizes in primary school, particularly in lower grades. Large class sizes and pupil-teacher ratios (PTRs) can make it difficult for teachers to attend to students’ learning needs, provide feedback, and mark homework, thus limiting student learning opportunities and contributing to poor learning outcomes. High PTR also can generate higher rates of grade repetition, which exacerbates large class sizes and leads some students to drop out of school.

Abridged National Vision for Malaw - Malawi 2063

Malawians have spoken. The Malawi 2063 (MW2063) aims to transform Malawi into a wealthy and self-reliant industrialized ‘upper-middle-income country’ by the year 2063.

Already, projections indicate that if the economy grows at an annual average rate of 6 percent, Malawi will attain the low middle-income status by 2030.

As a matter of fact, if the country is more innovative and productive, both the low and upper middle-income status will be reached much earlier.

Malawi COVID-19 Socio-Economic Recovery Plan 2021-2023

The first cases of COVID-19 in Malawi, which also marked the beginning of the first wave of the pandemic, were confirmed on 2nd April 2020. The transmission of COVID-19 evolved very slowly, with cases increasing moderately until they reached a first wave peak in early July 2020. The rapid transmission of COVID-19 cases was partly aided by the returning residents from neighbouring countries, especially South Africa; and political campaigns ahead of the June 2020 elections, when social distancing and other hygiene protocols were flouted.

The Malawi 2063 First 10-Year Implementation Plan (Mip-1) 2021-2030

The Malawi 2063 Vision (MW2063) was launched in January, 2021 to chart Malawi's new development trajectory with the aim of achieving an upper- middle income status by the year 2063. MW2063 reflects the collective aspirations of the people of Malawi to achieve inclusive wealth creation and self-reliance for economic independence.

The Malawi 2063 First 10-year Implementation Plan (MIP-1) operationalizes the MW2063 from 2021 to 2030. This is the first MIP in a series of four 10- year plans that will be developed to drive the implementation and realization of MW2063.
