For example, genetics research enhances the understanding of how genes and environmental factors interact to influence the health of individuals and communities. Gene localization and identification studies would be helpful in identifying genes in individuals or communities that cause or contribute to a disease/disorder or a trait.

Researchers in the fields of social sciences and humanities work within a variety of economic, cultural, legal and political settings that influence the emphasis of their disciplines involving their own techniques, procedures and ethical approaches. Even within the same setting and discipline, individuals may have different moral precepts that guide their work. No declaration could successfully impose a rigid set of rules to which social and humanities researchers everywhere should be expected to adhere.

Universal social pensions, which provide a basic pension to older people regardless of income or assets, are an increasingly popular approach in Sub-Saharan Africa to ensure a live in dignity and wellbeing for the elderly. This brief summarizes findings of a study by the Malawi
Network of Older Persons’ Organization (MANEPO), HelpAge International, and the Ministry of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare (MoGCDSW), which finds that a universal social pension is both needed and feasible in Malawi.
The Ministry of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare (MoGCDSW) is mandated to promote equal participation of women, men, girls, and boys in the national development agenda. Gender mainstreaming is one of the key strategies employed by the ministry to fulfil its mandate and is designated as a Key Result Area in the ministry’s strategic plan.1 To achieve the objectives of this Key Result Area, the ministry coordinates gender mainstreaming interventions across all sectors of Malawi’s government.
