Agriculture is the mainstay of the economy in Malawi. The sector contributes about 36% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), 87% of the total employment, supplies more than 65% of the manufacturing sector’s raw materials, provides 64% of the total income of the rural people, and contributes more than 90% of the foreign exchange earnings. It is the main livelihood of the majority of rural people, who account for more than 85% of the current estimated 12-13 million people.

Application to conduct research in Malawi

The benefits of human genetics research in promoting the health of mankind cannot be over-emphasised. For example, genetics research enhances the understanding of how genes and environmental factors interact to influence the health of individuals and communities. Gene localization and identification studies would be helpful in identifying genes in individuals or communities that cause or contribute to a disease/disorder or a trait.

Malawi National regulatory requirement on human samples

Researchers in the fields of social sciences and humanities work within a variety of economic, cultural, legal and political settings that influence the emphasis of their disciplines involving their own techniques, procedures and ethical approaches. Even within the same setting and discipline, individuals may have different moral precepts that guide their work. No declaration could successfully impose a rigid set of rules to which social and humanities researchers everywhere should be expected to adhere.

Considering the increasing number of research activities in the country and the efforts by the Ministry of Health to accelerate health research especially among local professionals, there is need to develop and disseminate procedures and guidelines for the conduct of health related research in Malawi.
