The Nairobi Summit on ICPD25 was held from 12th to 14th November 2019 at theKenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi with the objective of getting the United Nations member states to recommit themselves to the Programme of Action (PoA) that was agreed on during the landmark International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) held in 1994 in Cairo, Egypt. The specific objectives of the Nairobi Summit were:

The Kenya Vision 2030, which was launched in June, 2008, aims to transform Kenya into an industrialized upper middle income economy offering a high quality of life to all its citizens by 2030. The Vision is being implemented through successive five-year Medium Term Plans (MTPs) of which this is the Third.

Under the guidance of the Economic Recovery Strategy for Wealth and Employment Creation (ERS), the Kenyan economy has recovered and resumed the path to rapid growth. The economy is expected to grow by more than 6 per cent in 2007 from 0.6 per cent in 2002. The growth has been widely distributed, covering all economic and social sectors resulting in reduction in poverty levels from 56 per cent in 2002 to 46 per cent in 2006.

Sanitation is a basic necessity that contributes to better human health, dignity and quality of life. The economic and social benefits of sanitation interventions create more time for productive pursuits, higher productivity, better performance at school and work, lower medical costs. Closer access leads to a better living environment, dignity, safety, convenience, comfort and status. However, in Kenya basic sanitation services are not accessible to the majority of the population.

About half of Kenya’s estimated 38.5 million people are poor, and some 7.5 million people live in extreme poverty, while over 10 million people suffer from chronic food insecurity and poor nutrition. In recent years, it is estimated that at any one time about two million people require assistance to access food. During periods of drought, heavy rains and/or floods, the number of people in need could double.

Kenya is a nation of multi-cultural diversity founded on national values and principles that include sustainable development. The country is committed to integrating the principles and practices of sustainable development into all aspects of education and learning to promote knowledge, values and attitudes with a view to creating a more sustainable and just society for all. This has been achieved through mobilization of the country’s potential and resources to increase access to quality education.

The promotion of gender equality and empowerment of women, youth and other vulnerable groups of society are key to accelerating the realization of Kenya Vision 2030. The sector will therefore focus on enhancing the implementation of affirmative action funds and creating opportunities for social-economic empowerment.

The State Department for Gender Affairs (SDGA) was established in November 2015 in the Ministry of Public Service, Youth and Gender Affairs. The Department was created from the former Ministry of Devolution and Planning to promote gender mainstreaming in national development processes and champion the socio-economic empowerment of women. Previously, gender issues were handled under a division in the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Development and as a directorate under the Ministry of Devolution and Planning.

The National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC) is the principal organ responsible for promoting gender equality and freedom from discrimination in all aspects of life in Kenya. The mandate of NGEC extends to ensuring the government’s compliance with all international treaties and conventions that Kenya has ratified relating to equality and non-discrimination, including concerns with equality and freedom from discrimination.
